Child Behavior Solutions Service Summary
Our core mission is to help families and caregivers identify practical solutions to their children’s chronic problem behaviors. Through ongoing collaboration and teamwork, we work with families to develop the perspective, knowledge and skill required to address unwanted behavior and nurture appropriate replacement behaviors.
Assessment & Plan Development
Our process always starts with extensive information gathering. Through multiple observations where the problem behaviors occur, in-depth parent/caregiver interviews, a developmental history, and use of behavior rating scales, we identify needs and establish goals for our work together. We then collaborate to examine target behaviors through the lens of a Functional Behavior Assessment.
What is a Functional Behavior Assessment?
A Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) is an excellent tool for identifying the function or purpose of a targeted behavior. Built on the assumption that a child is communicating a need through engagement in problem behavior, this process involves looking for patterns in what happens around and/or to the child just before and just after the problem behavior occurs. Examination of these patterns helps to enhance understanding of "why" a child engages in unwanted behaviors. Through this informed understanding, behavior support plans are designed to modify variables that maintain the problem behavior and teach appropriate replacement behaviors using positive interventions. Behavior plans are tailored to reflect the specific needs and goals of each family or individual.
In Home Coaching
Once a behavior plan has been crafted, we provide on site coaching during the initial stages of implementation to ensure families feel clear and comfortable with the intervention strategy.
Coaching involves:
- Initial modeling of the intervention.
- One on one guidance with each caregiver as they attempt implementation.
- Provision of constructive feed back through data.
Workshops
We can provide workshops and staff training at your child’s school or daycare. We will individualize the training for your specific needs. Training include hands-on strategies and practical information that teachers/caregivers can take back and use with children.
Training topics include:
- Positive classroom management strategies for students with disabilities in general education and special class settings.
- How to conduct a Functional Behavior Assessment and develop a Behavior Support Plan for students with challenging behaviors.
- Disability awareness and intervention strategies for children with disabilities such as ASD, anxiety disorders, ADHD, OCD and Tourette Syndrome.
- Para-educator training: how to support students in general education settings, understanding how to use prompting strategies to increase student independence, and how to work effectively with classroom teams.
- How to set up a classroom to support students with disabilities.
- How to set up a Building Screening/Intervention Team.
- Understanding your child’s behavior with a developmental perspective.
